Look I know you all want to find queerness in everything, but things don’t work that way in Japan. It’s a very conservative society. The relationship between #Yshak and #Notaka in the anime is not a gay relationship, it’s a spiritual friendship. If you haven’t studied Japanese culture you might not understand it and you should probably read more about the culture rather than just using a rudimentary knowledge of the language to justify your own biased opinion. You can’t just rewrite the official story and then call it a translation.

Um homosexuality isn’t a culturally dependent thing, there are gay people all over the world in every culture. There are gay people in Japan. The only people who think that there are no gay people in Japan are right-wing straight people in Japan.
#TNNDD was created by a director who built their whole career on depicting queer relationships in fantasy settings. It makes sense, right? Like, regardless of what the society around you does or does not think is normal or acceptable, in an escapist fantasy world anything is possible.
Besides, I don’t think it’s Japan that’s the conservative society. It was an American translation agency that edited all the queerness out of the show to make it “family friendly”.

I played a minor role in the fansub and I honestly don’t see what we could be mistranslating. #Yshak and #Notaka express their feelings for each other in very straightforward terms: Yshak says “I want to be with you until all the suns go out and the world returns to dust”. I think it’s pretty obvious that they’re in love.

Okay, look there’s a lot that you’ve stretched beyond reason in the fansub. You translated “najimi no nai basho” as “away from the person I love,” when it just means “unfamiliar place”. You translated “itoshii hito” as “boyfriend”, but it means “beloved” or “someone dear to me”, which doesn’t necessarily mean a romantic relationship at all.

Nobody talks that way in English though. “Beloved”? #Yshak may be ancient and immortal but that doesn’t mean he has to talk like a sixty year old. Honestly, “boyfriend” makes a lot more sense to me.

yeah another thing to consider is that even if “itoshii” is used to describe friends sometimes, a lot of times those “friendships” are just covers for actual romantic relationships that people can’t own up to. same thing happened in victorian england.
